2024 Expedition ‘Manchurian Steppe’

Manchurian Steppe, 24 May – 15 June 2024

In the far eastern corner of Mongolia, lies the province of Dornod, home to the Siberian taiga, Manchurian flora and fauna, and the vast Central Asian steppes. The region of Dornod exhibits remarkable biodiversity, including some of the largest remaining herds of Mongolian gazelle and the elusive Pallas’ Cat, known as Manul in Mongolian. This diverse landscape comprises the vast Buir lake, meandering rivers, sand dunes, rolling hills, and scattered mountains.

Highlights of the 2024 Expedition:
Organized by André van Eck, this expedition will be a fascinating exploration of an area sparsely studied by entomologists. It encompasses Buir lake and its surrounding wetlands, stipa steppe, and Nömrög N.P.
It marks our most eastern location and earliest season start ever, kicking off in the last week of May ’24 and lasting three weeks. This means we have high expectations for discovering a rich and diverse entomofauna.
